Valentine’s Day Writing Activity: Valentine’s Day SMS

Instructions

Please note, you can use this short Valentine’s Day writing activity in your online and offline classes. For offline classes, you could turn it into a speaking activity whereby students respond orally to a message and the rest of the class guesses which message the student is responding to.

1. Display the PDF and screen share it with the group, or send every student their own PDF copy.
2. Give your students a few minutes to analyze the messages and ask questions about vocabulary.
3. Choose a message at random and write a reply in the chat.
4. The first student to guess which message you are replying to wins. They now choose a message to respond to in the chat.
5. Again, the first student to guess which message they are replying to wins… continue like this.

Note: you might also simply have your students take turns responding to text messages, or put them in pairs or groups to complete the activity. You can prolong the activity in pairs by making them continue the conversation by several messages.

We like this Valentine’s Day writing activity because it gets students to work on writing short, concise and practical messages in English. What’s more, all the messages are written in a natural way by native speakers, which gives students a better feel for the language.
