Talk about Family and Friends ESL Activity

Please don’t pick a student and ask them to describe their neighbor in 3 sentences again… Beginners can talk about family and friends with a bit more enthusiasm now!

Could you simply point to a student and ask them to describe, in three sentences, their neighbor, mother, and grandfather? Sure! But oh so boring… Put some spark into these banal but ever so important ESL tasks and activities. With this one, you can talk about family and friends in a much more fun way.

Use it however you want, but here’s what we suggest:

  1. Follow the directions on the PDF: Give students some time to follow the directions, choosing 3 people on the page and describing them via the inspiration of the images on the page. Students can then present their descriptions and correct one another.
  2. Describe one person: Choose one of the options for all your students to describe. Give either a time limit or a number of sentences. Then, students take turns presenting and finally vote on who has the best/worst/etc. mother/father/brother/boss/uncle/etc.
  3. Make assumptions: Put students in pairs. They will choose 3 people on the PDF that exist for their partner and then make 5 assumptions about that person inspired by the images. Partners share their assumptions and get a point for each correct one. For the incorrect ones, the other should explain the truth if they are willing.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
