Real English Conversation Activity: At the doctor’s office

Use this online friendly activity to have a real English conversation at the doctor’s office with your students.

How to use this activity?

Here is a fun activity for your students to feel like they are part of a real English conversation. This game requires two dice, real or virtual. Here is a link to a virtual dice roller.

  1. Explain to your students that they are at the doctor’s office, speaking with their doctor.
  2. Roll the two dice.
  3. The die on the left corresponds to what the doctor says. These are the phrases on the left side of the page.
  4. The die on the right corresponds to the type of response from the patient. These are the constraints on the right side of the page.

Students can play as a class, each coming up with a response for the same phrase. Maybe they can vote on the best response, the funniest, etc. Or they can play in pairs or small groups.

Want to go further? Let your students use the game as a prompt for a larger conversation – give them a limit to the number of responses. Then they can present their conversations to the class.
Have students come up with their own phrases from a real English conversation at the doctor’s office and then play the game again with their original phrases.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
