ESL Discussion: National Day of Mourning

Learn about National Day of Mourning and why some people recognize it rather than Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is not the same day for everyone in the United States of America. Use this ESL discussion worksheet to learn about why some groups of people celebrate a “National Day of Mourning” on the same day as Thanksgiving.

  • Warm-up question ideas: The news segment is called “Two Americas.” What do you think that means? Tell us what you know about Thanksgiving Day.
  • Watch the video once and ask the students which day should be recognized: Thanksgiving or National Day of Mourning?
  • Look at the vocabulary words on the PDF before watching the video a second time.
  • Put students in pairs to answer the questions on the left.
  • Set up new pairs to complete the speaking activity on the right.
  • As a free ESL discussion worksheet, there is no group activity or go further activity.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
