ESL Discussion: Life as a White Student in a 99% Black School

Follow Mykenzie as she begins school as a minority, even though she is white.

WARNING: This discussion revolves the idea of racial identity.

But it does does avoid any “What do you think about a certain group of people?” type of questions. I personally tested it out with my discussion groups last week and nothing spiraled out of control, and there was no negativity or awkward conversation. It was a very interesting topic, in the end. The story takes the stereotypical notion of American minority and flips it on its head, putting a white girl in a position of minority.

I recommend you watch the video, then look at the worksheet and imagine how your group(s) will react before you decide to use it.

Warm up question idea: How diverse was your high school experience?

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
