Break Up the Routine

To break up the routine, students choose a theme at the top and then create a new and interesting routine based on the boring original.

How to use this activity?

This interactive PDF was designed as a task-based ESL activity you can use during any number of different types of lesson plans. The bulk of the activity deals with daily routines and activities but with a twist. Students receive a routine schedule in the form of a daily planner. To break up the routine, they will choose a theme at the top and then create a new and interesting routine based on the original.

Students choose the theme “nature” and they write a fun daily routine for an imaginary person:

First, she is woken up by a rooster. Then, she takes a bath in the river. After that, she eats fruits from the forest for breakfast. A couple hours later, she talks to the animals in the forest. After work, she volunteers for an hour at a veterinary clinic. At night, she watches a documentary about lions on Netflix.

The task is meant to take up about 30 minutes of class time with your beginner students. However, you can use it with more advanced students or groups as long as you expect more detail.

Have students present their new schedules to the class and vote on their favorite, the most interesting, the most possible, etc.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
