Which “Be” Is It?

Work on 5 basic structures using the verb be that are useful for introducing yourself and others for beginners.

His name is Matt.
He is British.
He is from London.
He is a teacher.
He is thirty-two years old.

You don’t know my friend Matt, but look how many ways we can use the verb be to introduce somebody. That’s what this activity is all about: pounding these basic structures into your learners’ minds while memorizing the forms of be in the present simple. Easy enough!

Give a copy to every student or pair and correct as a class after everyone finishes. Next, have everyone write 5 sentences about themselves and present to the class. If you’ve already started working on questions, have students ask their partners questions to get these 5 sentences so they can present each other to the class. Finally, have each student introduce a celebrity by using these 5 sentences while the others guess.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
