Online Friendly ESL Discussion: What Europeans Think about American Life

Quick and Easy No Prep ESL Discussion

What do Europeans think about American life?

Today you and your students will be talking about the differences between European and American culture. More specifically, this is a video of some Europeans being shocked by some of the things they learn about American life. Coming from America, most of these things are simply second nature to me and part of everyday life. They are sometimes shocking for me, too! But, I didn’t want it to be simply an America bashing lesson, so I added some information on the answers side of the sheet to help explain some of the differences. It’s very easy to be shocked by some of the information, but it’s not always the full story… Use the extra information to take the lesson a step further or just to impress your students with your knowledge 😉

If you like warmers (it’s basically my favorite part of the lesson), you could simply display the American flag and ask people to shout out, or write down, vocabulary related to America.

Start by distributing the PDF to your students, and then watch the video below once or twice.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
