ESL Discussion Worksheet: Male Beauty Pageants
In this 90-minute ESL discussion worksheet, your students will learn about what male beauty pageants look like in South Korea, discuss in pairs about the impact beauty standards have on our society today and then come up with attributes that might be considered in a beauty pageant for a number of non-human creatures.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder… But it’s also on the television and billboards. Everyone has a pretty good idea of how a beauty pageant works, but they may never have thought there was a male equivalent on offer. Learn about male beauty pageants in your ESL classroom today, and then discuss the notion of beauty in general and how it fits into society today. Finally, define some attributes that might be considered in a beauty pageant for a number of creatures other than human beings.
Instructions
Use this ESL Discussion Worksheet however you’d like, but here’s what we recommend:
- Warm-up: Ask your students to each answer the question: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “beauty pageant”? Or, go around the room and list several attributes of what makes a person beautiful.
- Watch the video once: At the end of the video ask everyone the same question: Would you rather go to a women’s or men’s beauty pageant? Yes, in this case they have to go.
- Vocabulary: Check out the vocabulary on the PDF and answer any questions.
- Watch the video a second time: Answer the questions on the PDF in pairs.
- Speaking Activity: Put students in pairs to complete the speaking activity – directions on the PDF.
- If you’ve still got time left over, put your students in new pairs or small groups and do the group activity.
