ESL Discussion: The Olympics Opening Ceremony
Use this ESL discussion worksheet on the Olympics opening ceremony to dissect how and why the controversy exploded and discuss related topics with your students. The topic of religion plays a role in the discussion, so please be careful about which groups you use it with!
Of course I wanted to do an ESL discussion worksheet for the Olympics opening ceremony, but it took some time for anyone to create a video that wasn’t just about enflaming the controversy that surrounded it. For me, it was truly an out-of-the-box and original opening ceremony. In fact, the biggest question in my head was, “Why did they ask Lady Gaga to sing in French…?” Of course I knew that many media outlets would jump on the drag queen bit towards the end, but I never thought it would take on such epic proportions! Every video that came out directly afterwards jumped on the bandwagon of “religious mockery” but I felt like there was much more to be said on the subject, and I’m glad I waited for this video to come out because it helps dissect how and why this happened.
Watch the video and answer the question for yourself first: Was it sacrilegious imagery or worldwide misunderstanding?
