ESL Prices and Numbers Activity
Students are put into pairs in this prices and numbers activity and given $100 to have an awesome weekend together. What will they buy?
This ESL prices and numbers activity was designed to be carried out in pairs, but could also be done in small groups (think about raising the total they have to spend) or individually.
Students are presented with a list of items and their prices. The task for each pair is to make a list of products they will purchase while spending 100 bucks to have an awesome weekend together.
To do so, they must agree on the products and calculate the prices to ensure they do not exceed $100. Once the list is prepared, the pairs present it to the rest of the class. At the A2 or upper A1 level, you can ask the learners to explain and justify their choices. For example:
“This weekend, we are buying:
- Two tickets to a play at $20 each because we enjoy culture.
- A relaxing Ayurvedic massage for $37 for Paul because he is very stressed after the workweek.
- Two fancy coffees $5.40 to wake us up and because we like people watching.
- etc.”
When the students present their lists, make sure that all prices are pronounced correctly and that the calculations are accurate!
