Discussion about Cemeteries

It’s Halloween season, or just another day in your classroom and you need an ESL discussion on cemeteries. Use this example from New Orleans!

There wasn’t much Halloweening during my time in Poland, but All Saints Day was alive and kicking. I had several students even cancel lessons as it’s a day off. Every year, the cemeteries turn into something resembling a street fair. It’s hard to express in words what the cemeteries in Warsaw look like after November 1. Some say it has to do with their utmost respect for their ancestors. Others say it is more about keeping up with the Jones’s. Whatever it is, it’s quite a sight and was great inspiration for an ESL discussion on cemeteries.

There is a place back home that has some interesting cultural differences when it comes to their treatment of the dead. This B1-B2 lesson takes a look at cemetery culture in the old swampy and haunted city of New Orleans down in Louisiana. It’s a great snapshot for an ESL discussion on cemeteries.

My only notes on this one is to pay attention to the warm-up activity as you are given 2 options depending on your group. Choose one or the other or even both. Just be sure they can stomach a conversation on death before going for warm-up activity B.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
