SOS! Thanksgiving SMS

This week represents many different things to lots of people. From what I gather where I am currently, it is simply a week of shopping and deals. Everywhere I go I see “Black Week” this and “Black Week” that. Sounds terrifying… Since when is it Black Week, anyway? Black Friday wasn’t violent and ridiculous enough!?

For others back home, it’s a stressful time full of family drama, frustration, fights, arguments… I always feel bad for this group of people and my family always made room at the table if any of our friends or neighbors found themselves in a less than perfect Thanksgiving situation.

For me, Thanksgiving was the most magical time of year. Black week? GOLDEN WEEK! Only 2 days of school… The weather was chilly but not bitterly cold. We waited for our cousins from distant lands to drive or fly into Indianapolis and then stay with us in a cramped house. Who would give up their room for Uncle Mark and Aunt Marcia? How would we fit an extra 7 people in the house for a week? I didn’t care. I was happy to give up my room! I wanted to sleep in the basement on the floor with my cousins!

And it only gets better as you get older. Did you know the night before Thanksgiving is actually the busiest night for bars in the United States? Everyone back home… old friends… old flames… old haunts. Beeriokart with good friends. Agh. I could go on and on.

This year will be my first year hosting a proper Thanksgiving in Europe. There are already 15 on the guest list but I know I’m missing a few. My wife is already worried about the whole thing. To calm her nerves, I told her quite simply… It’s supposed to be a big mess 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

How to use it?

This activity plays out exactly like the Coronavirus SMS game. Display the PDF on your screen or screen share it with your students online. In turns, students secretly choose an SMS to reply to. They write their reply in the chat and other students must guess which SMS on the board they are replying to. It’s that simple! Your students will surprise you with their humor 🙂
