What Are You Thankful For?

A Thanksgiving board game speaking activity based on the tradition of going around the table and saying what you are thankful for.

This Thanksgiving board game speaking activity is based on the Thanksgiving tradition of going around the table and saying what you are thankful for before digging into Thanksgiving dinner. In principle, it is a speaking activity, asking students to explain why they are thankful (or not thankful) for one thing or another.

I believe there is a good way to play this game, and I’ll share it with you now. But if you have another way you want to use it, please do! Our activities are there to be used creatively 🙂

Students play individually and everyone starts on one of the “start” spaces. You can play as a class, with multiple students starting on each point, or play in small groups of 3 so that everyone starts individually. Put a time limit on the clock, something nice and long like 10-20 minutes. The goal is to collect the most amount of spaces by the end of the time limit. Students collect spaces by moving to them and saying why they are thankful for that thing. Sometimes they will have to get creative because they might not be so thankful for it!

Students can also “steal” spaces by moving onto a space that was already captured by another student. Now they must say why they are not thankful for that particular thing in their life. Now, the space is theirs!

If you have any other interesting ways you think this can be played, please share it with us in the comments!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
