How to use this activity
Students play in small groups or as a class.
The concept is simple: share the PDF with your student(s) during your online or offline lessons. The first student reads out a message in green, then a second student (go clockwise) reads out an appropriate response in blue. A third student writes a response from the person in green in the chat, and a fourth student writes a final response from the person in blue in the chat but they must use one of the emoticons at the bottom of the page (they can simply specify which number).
In the end, you should have a short 4 message long text message conversation. Move on to the next student who starts the process over with a different green SMS. Continue until all the text messages have been used.
For example:
The first student chooses SMS 1: Hey are we going hiking today or what?
The second student chooses SMS 13: I guess it depends on the weather.
The third student writes: “I thought you couldn’t wait to explore the new trails regardless of the weather!”.
The fourth student finishes the conversation with: “I was, but I don’t want to catch a cold (emoji 7)”.
Description
The concept is as simple as it gets! However, the aim of this activity is not one to take lightly! Students, especially online, often don’t get a chance to practice writing. Sure, writing exercises to do at home are great, but not very interactive, and… who’s got the time these days!?
This is a great way to practice writing in class and get more familiar with day-to-day English and topics that actually pertain to the real world!
You can use this activity as a warm-up, a time-killer, or an end-of-lesson activity when reviewing talking about hobbies and free time. And just like our other Jukeboxes, it can be used online and offline for groups or one-on-one lessons!
