Situations at Family Dinner
Practice adverbs of manner while discussing “What happens next?” in the face of situations during a family dinner.
While this activity was originally created for Thanksgiving, it can be used at anytime of the year. The premise is simple. Divide up your students in teams, or let them play individually or in small groups. There are 10 different situations that might arise at a family dinner they are hosting. The task is this, set a time limit, maybe 3-5 minutes for each situation. In that time, students must come up with “What happens next?” by using the adverbs of manner in their respective column. The goal is to use as many as possible within the time limit. Once time is up, they share with the class their sentences (they should write them down). For each grammatically correct sentence, they check the box next to the adverb they used to keep track of points. Once you have gone through all the situations, or you run out of time, tally up the points to see which team or student wins!
For example: Arguments break out during dinner… What happens next?
Team 1:
I quietly leave the room.
My Aunt Mildred moves her chair to sit far away from Uncle Kevin because she hates his politics.
Grandpa clearly doesn’t want arguments at the dinner table and yells at everyone to “Shut it!”
