Prepositions with Work Activity
A fun way to practice prepositions with “work” in your online or offline classroom. Students describe their friend’s job in six sentences using the prepositions in, on, at, with, for and from.
Practice 6 prepositions with work: in, on, at, for, with and from. English being as it is, some prepositions can be paired with multiple propositions on the sheet, but we have done our best to keep things as clear as possible!
Instructions
- Display the PDF, send it to your students, or print out a copy for each group.
- Give students some time to come up with six sentences using the verb work and the different prepositions.
- Then, students will present their character and the others should guess which of the four people on the sheet it is and what their job might be.
My friend works at a coffee shop.
My friend works for a startup.
My friend works with different types of software.
My friend works from Friday to Monday.
My friend works in marketing.
I think your friend is a graphic designer. Is it Luke?
As mentioned above, some prepositions are not always so clear, but here are the general rules:
- I work at… location / type of company / company name
- I work for… type of company / company name
- I work in… industry / department
- I work with… people / tools for the job
- I work on… tasks / projects
- I work from… time
Here are our suggestions for the prepositions and propositions:
At: The mall on the weekends, A coworking space, The hospital, The zoo, Home A coffee shop
In: Marketing, Client services, Technology, Finance, Law, Medicine, Sales
On: Projects nobody else wants to do, their phone, Many projects at once, One project at a time, Complex business problems, Things even when they go home, Making the world a better place
For: A big corporation, A startup, The state, An advertising agency, The mafia, An American company, Apple, A non-profit organization, Himself/Herself
With: Animals, Computers, Different types of software, their spouse, young people, a big team of people, very wealthy clients, sick people
From: Friday to Monday, whenever to whenever, dusk til dawn, 9 to 5, Monday to Friday
