Prepositional Phrases Activity

Based on a “repeat after me” type of game, students will master the use of prepositions in complex sentences by creating longer and longer sentences by adding prepositional phrases one on top of another in this prepositional phrases activity.

Based on the simple “In my suitcase” game, this prepositional phrases activity is a fun way for your students to master certain prepositions typically found in longer chains of prepositional phrases. Be it in writing or on television, your students will encounter prepositions everywhere, and possibly many all at the same time. Play this fun game to help them on their way to glory!

*We recommend this activity especially when reviewing or practicing gerunds!

Instructions

  1. Display the PDF for all your students to see. They play as a class.
  2. Choose one of the prompts and a student to begin.
  3. They will finish the phrase however they want, ending the first prepositional phrase.
  4. The next student in line will add a prepositional phrase to the previous student’s response to create a more detailed sentence.
  5. BUT! The student must repeat the first part of the sentence before adding their own prepositional phrase. This continues as the sentence gets longer and longer.
  6. Each time a preposition at the bottom of the page is used, the teacher will check the box, eliminating that preposition from the round.
  7. All students begin with 2 points. Every time they fail to add to the sentence with an appropriate preposition, or cannot repeat the entirety of the phrase that comes before their section, they lose a point. The last student standing is the winner!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
