Past Simple Practice Activity: Zimasheet

A fun way to practice the past simple with your A1-A2 students while they get to know each other. It can be used as a warm-up, review or discovery.

How to use this activity

Use this activity to practice the past simple with your A1-A2 students. It can be used as a warm-up, review or discovery.

  1. Put students into pairs.
  2. If working online, share the PDF or print a copy out for each of your pairs if in the classroom.
  3. Students will make 10 assumptions about their partner by associating the images with the time expressions we use when talking about the past.
  4. Give your students a time limit to write down their ten assumptions. Then, students share their assumptions with their partner and earn one point for each correct assumption.
  5. Once everyone is finished, pairs can share with the class the assumptions they got correct about their partners.

To add to the challenge, you can have your students write questions instead of sentences.

You stopped smoking in 1999 because you had your first child.

You fell asleep in a ZOOM meeting yesterday morning.

You trained for a marathon last winter.

etc.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
