ESL Discussion: Debunking Exercise Myths

Learn about (or hear again) some common exercise myths and get them debunked by a Harvard professor.

I could do a whole series on debunking such and such myths, I think. And I might. Because I always learn something really important, realizing each time how much information in my brain still needs to get sorted. This one is great for the start of the year with lots of people needing motivation to keep their New Year’s resolutions. What’s nice about this video is that there’s no hunky guy or fit girl telling you about how you should exercise. Nope. It’s a Harvard professor who looks at the subject of exercise through the lens of evolution and anthropology. A totally different way to tackle the subject!

  • Warm-up question ideas: Share a fitness or exercise tip you’ve received or would like to share with the class. Make a list.
  • Watch the video once and compare with the list of advice you made as a class. Ask if anyone knows another exercise myth or bad exercise advice.
  • Look at the vocabulary words on the PDF before watching the video a second time.
  • Put students in pairs to answer the questions on the left.
  • Set up new pairs to complete the speaking activity on the right.
  • Put students in groups of 3-4 and have them complete the group activity. If you have multiple groups, think of having them all describe the same person and comparing their results.
