ESL Discussion: AI Girlfriends
Use this ESL discussion worksheet to talk about AI girlfriends and their potential impact on society with your advanced students.
It’s true that ChatGPT helps me create very specific vocabulary sheets when need be, along with other small tasks I used to rely on Google for, and I knew that the AI girlfriend projects would be just around the corner. What I didn’t count on was how much money people would make off it! Caryn Marjorie made $100,000 in a week after she launched her virtual AI avatar to “help lonely people.” Mhm… Help lonely people give her their money is more like it! This ESL discussion dives into the new dawn of human relationships (or lack thereof) and the AI girlfriend epidemic that may sweep through many parts of the world.
- Warm-up question examples: What do you do when you’re feeling lonely? What are some difficulties one may encounter in a human to human relationship? What is the hardest part about being in a relationship (friend, family or romantic)?
- Watch the video once: Say to your students: “At the end of the report, the reporter says that this situation has lifelong ramifications. What ramifications do you believe are possible?”
- Vocabulary: Check out the vocabulary on the PDF and answer any questions.
- Watch the video again: Answer the questions on the PDF in pairs.
- Speaking Activity: Put students in pairs to complete the speaking activity – directions on the PDF.
- If you’ve still got time left over, put your students in small groups to discuss the group activity.
- For homework, think about assigning the Go Further article on the back page for reading.
