ESL Discussion: Cesca Chair Furniture Trend

This ESL discussion worksheet picks up on the once and current furniture trend that is the Bauhaus-inspired Cesca chair.

We never had this type of chair in our house growing up, but the moment I saw the thumbnail for this video, it was instantly recognizable. Friends’ houses, television series and movies all had this chair or something incredibly similar, especially those places that still had a style reminiscent of the 70’s and 80’s. Unbeknownst to me, this chair has been living a revival recently on the internet as a design and furniture trend much like the Eames Chair. Apparently the Cesca chair is literally everywhere, but remains expensive for something so ubiquitous. What is the myth behind the legend? Why are we talking about chairs? English conversation courses are getting out of hand.

  1. Warm-up question: What’s your favorite piece of furniture in your house? Why? Is there a story behind it?
  2. Watch the video once: Ask your students, “Why do you think something so ubiquitous has remained so popular?”
  3. Vocabulary: Check out the vocabulary on the PDF and answer any questions.
  4. Watch the video again: Answer the questions on the PDF in pairs.
  5. Speaking Activity: Put students in pairs to complete the speaking activity – directions on the PDF.
  6. If you’ve still got time left over, put your students in small groups to discuss the group activity.
  7. For homework, think about assigning the Go Further article on the back page for reading.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
