Second Conditional Questions Activity

Our second conditional questions activity reverse engineers the question-making experience in order to generate more interesting and original questions from your students.

It’s good to practice making questions in English, but without any guidance or restraints, students tend to ask the same questions over and over again. This second conditional questions activity actually has students working backwards. They are given a response to which they must create a matching question, along with a theme in which they are constrained. This backwards engineering really works your students question-making capabilities and generates more original and interesting questions at the same time.

Display the activity and set a time limit. Choose a theme at random and tell your students they must write 3 questions matching the three responses found underneath the theme and within the constraint(s) found in the middle of the activity. Once time is up, students share their questions. Each grammatically correct and ORIGINAL question earns a point. Make sure the questions relate to the theme!

Think about putting your students in pairs afterwards and have them ask each other the questions they wrote during the activity to get their partner’s real answers! This repetition will help to integrate the target language.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
