Practice Present Perfect in Pairs – Printable & Online-Friendly Game

Looking for a fun and interactive way to help your students practice the present perfect in pairs? This activity is designed for both virtual and in-person classrooms, making it perfect for ZOOM lessons or as a printable for real-life use. With this game, students practice the present perfect tense by making assumptions about their partners using provided time expressions and images to inspire their creativity.

The time expressions are designed for students with prior knowledge of the present perfect.

How to Play:

  • Display the PDF on your screen or send a copy to each student.
  • Pair up your students and give them a time limit to create 5-10 assumptions about their partners using the present perfect tense, the images, and the time expressions on the poster.
  • Students share their assumptions and earn a point for each correct guess. Partners can correct any wrong assumptions.
  • Switch partners and repeat until time runs out!

Example Assumptions:

  • “I think you haven’t eaten any vegetables this week.”
  • “You’ve checked Instagram three times today.”
  • “You haven’t had a moustache since the 90s!”

This engaging activity encourages students to practice speaking while improving their understanding of the present perfect tense, making it a versatile tool for pair work in any classroom setting!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
