Instagram Activity: Possessive Adjectives

Students look for pictures on the internet to fit captions that utilize possessive adjectives in a fun Instagram-esque activity. A fun way to practice this target language!

Okay, so while it’s called an Instagram activity, that doesn’t mean your students have to have an Instagram account. It’s more of a picture-finding game with the target language being possessive adjectives. In any case, we think this one could be a lot of fun for your students (big or small) while they attempt to master possessive adjectives.

There’s probably a dozen ways you could use this activity, but here are a couple of our own thoughts.

  1. Time trial: Display the activity for everyone to see (screen share for online, projector for classroom, or a few printable PDFs for small groups). Give a time limit to your students, be it a quick draw of 1-2 minutes, or a longer time period for them to look for several pictures. At the end of the time limit, have students present their pictures one at a time. The others must guess which caption is supposed to fit the description. You can give a point to the person who chooses the correct caption and then move on.
  2. Best photo: Choose at random a caption from the activity. Give your students one minute to look for a picture that would fit. Students share their photos one by one, and then vote on the best photo for the given caption.
  3. Don’t forget the little side quest at the bottom right. Challenge your students to use a possessive adjective in their caption!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
