Discussion Worksheet: How nuns got squeezed out of the communion wafer business

The last time I even had a communion wafer was probably on an Easter Sunday a very very long time ago. The weird taste and unique texture will always stay with me, though. I had never thought about where they come from, either, but I had seen the giant 5 liter jugs of church wine hidden in the backroom! Turns out the communion wafers were sort of the same deal. It’s a bit disappointing, actually :/

Here is a suggested sequence for using this discussion worksheet:

  • Warm-up question: What comest to mind when you think of nuns?
  • Watch the video once without subtitles.
  • Work through the vocabulary on the worksheet and answer any questions.
  • Watch the video again with the subtitles.
  • Put students in pairs to complete the listening comprehension questions.
  • Put students in pairs to complete the speaking activity.
  • Put students in small groups to complete the group activity.
