Online Friendly ESL Discussion: The Right to Repair
Today you and your students will be talking about the right to repair. This topic has been steadily gaining traction over the last few years both in the states and in Europe. Products from electronics to appliances to automobiles have become more and more complicated, and so have their repairs. What you could have done in your garage or on your work bench a few years ago would be impossible these days with newer products. Watch this clip from a small town local news station to learn more.
Use this ESL Discussion Worksheet however you’d like, but here’s what we recommend:
- Warm-up question: Tell us about the last time you fixed something yourself. Are you handy? Who is the handiest person you know?
- Watch the video once: Ask your students if they have recently faced the issue of rising repair costs. What do they think about it? The link to the video is also on the PDF.
- Vocabulary: Check out the vocabulary on the PDF and answer any questions.
- Watch the video again: Answer the questions on the PDF in pairs.
- Speaking Activity: Put students in pairs to complete the speaking activity – directions on the PDF.
