Simple Past Photo Game with Irregular Verbs

Use this simple past photo game in conjunction with our Tic Tac Irregular review sheet for another way to practice irregular verbs.

It’s day fourteen of our 15 days of irregular verb activities and we’ve got a simple past photo game you can use to practice irregular verbs with your students, ready to download. Students are presented with 15 photos, each portraying a different type of reaction from the subject. Students must describe “Why do they look like that?” while others guess which photo they are describing.

How it works

So simple! Play as a class. Display the PDF for all to see. Students take turns answering the question “Why do they look like that?” for different photos while the others guess which photo they are describing.

So how do we get them to focus on the irregular verbs this time? We use the Tic-Tac-Irregular game to create a 4-in-a-row competition connected to the photos.

Display both PDFs for everyone to see. Choose a color for each student. Every time they correctly use one of the irregular verbs to describe the image and another student guesses correctly (assuring the use of sensible phrases), but an x in their color on the verb. Students take turns. The goal is to get 4 in a row (horizontal, diagonal, or vertical) of the same color.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
