This activity actually works three separate muscle groups:

  1. Each sentence fragment contains an underlined adjective + preposition colocation critical to the sentence.
  2. Each sentence fragment ends with either because or so to work students abilities to talk about cause/consequence.
  3. The middle contains some basic adverbs of frequency students will have to use when completing the sentences.

A simple way to use this activity would be to give students a time limit to finish the sentence fragments by coming up with a coherent cause or a consequence and using one of the adverbs of frequency in the middle. They can only be used once a piece for each round. That means students will only have to finish 8 sentences. After the time limit is up, go through each card on the left and right side and ask for students to give their causes or consequences. Students can then vote on the best, funniest, worst, etc.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
