There Is City Vocabulary
There is city vocabulary in this activity, plus combinations of there is structures and quantifiers all perfect for A1 learners.
If you didn’t guess it, yes, there is city vocabulary in this activity. But not just that! Use this simple activity to help your students integrate the various combinations using the there is structure in English. Students will be confronted with the following combinations: there is, there isn’t, there aren’t any, there is no, there are no… There are also useful countable and non-countable nouns mixed in for your students to discover. On top of all that, use this activity to discover, practice or review basic quantifiers at the A1 (beginners) level: many, several, much, a couple, lots, a lot of, etc.
Use it as an individual activity, small group, or class activity. Either go by the book by giving students time to follow the directions on the PDF and then present their descriptions, or turn it into a game. For example:
- Put students into pairs or small groups. Set a time limit and choose one of the cities. Groups will match as many descriptions as possible to the city and then present to the class. Count how many correct descriptions they chose and award a point to the group with the most descriptions.
- Play as a class by choosing one of the cities and letting your students take turns choosing a description to match it. The student who runs out of correct descriptions (judged by the class) loses.
- This time, you shout out some descriptions and the first student to raise their hand with the correct answer earns a point.
- At the end of any of these versions, have your students think deeply about some other descriptions they could add.
- Or, let them play with their own experiences by giving them 2 minutes to come up with 4 descriptions of their own for a city they’ve been to. They will then read their descriptions to the class who will guess which city they are talking about
- Got any other ideas to use this there is city vocabulary activity? Leave them in the comments 🙂
