Telling Time in English – Board Game
Our Telling Time in English Board Game for your beginners practices this important functional language AND vocabulary for everyday objects.
How to use this activity?
- Display the board game and use whiteboard tools to create game pieces for each player.
- Everyone starts at 12 o’clock midnight, and takes turn rolling a die to advance their piece clockwise.
- When they land on a space, they must say what they were doing* at that specific time with the help of one of the objects in the middle. But, they cannot use the name of the object!
- Then, the first student to correctly guess what object they needed to use for that particular activity gets to advance their game piece two places. The speaker gets to advance their piece one space.
- Some of the spaces easily correspond to the hours on the clock face, while others are more ambiguous. Students must use the verbal phrases at the bottom right of the game board to tell the time.
- You can play a simple version where they must do one turn around the clock, or a longer version where they must go for a full 24 hours!
*You could change the target language easily with a different prompt question: What were you doing? What will you be doing? What did you do? What couldn’t you do because you were missing something? What did you need to do at that time? etc…
