The Best Season – Vocabulary & Comparison Activity

Talk about the seasons with your A1 students with this easy screen-share seasons vocabulary activity. Great for online and offline classrooms

How to use this activity in your offline class?

  • Tell your students you are going to talk about typical activities for each season of the year.
  • Ask your students if their habits and behaviors change based on the season.
  • Then, put the names of the four seasons on the table and place the cut out activities around them. The group associates the activities with the seasons by placing the verbs in the best box.
  • Explain the more difficult verbs if needed.
  • In order for the activity to last longer than 3 minutes, have the students justify each response, for example, I prefer doing the housework in spring because I like to clean my house after winter, and have them ask their peers questions, for example, Why do you get your hair cut in winter? For me, I like it when my hair is long because it’s cold out!
  • If there are any cards that don’t inspire your students to speak much, don’t worry about it.
  • If your student is really creative, pass out some blank pieces of paper and let them come up with their own activities.

A variant:

  • Draw another day card at random;
  • Put your students into 2-4 groups. Each group is given a different season in which they must describe this type of day. They must write 5-10 sentences.
  • Then, compare answers.

Go further:

  • Print and cut out the day cards on page 3 of the printable PDF.
  • Select a season at random.
  • The objective of the activity is to imagine a… day in…
  • Students describe this type of day in this season in 5-10 phrases. Give your students some time to write down their descriptions and then have them present to the class. Compare results.
  • It’s possible to do another round with a different season.
