This printable and online-friendly A1-level speaking activity helps beginner ESL students confidently use prepositions of place while reinforcing basic household and everyday object vocabulary. Perfect for practicing words like in, on, under, next to, and behind, this activity turns simple nouns into fun, interactive guessing games.

How It Works:

There are 15 common objects on the activity (e.g., keys, wallet, phone, book, socks). Their task is to write or think of 3–5 possible places where that object might be. For example:

Object: Keys
Possible places: In my pocket, on the table, in the bowl next to the door

Then, students compare their answers with a partner or the whole class. For each matching place, they earn a point!

Two Ways to Play:

1. Pair or Small Group Version:

  • Each pair receives an activity sheet.

  • They secretly write 3–5 places using prepositions of place.

  • They compare with others and earn 1 point for every matching answer.

2. Whole Class Version:

  • One object is read aloud (e.g., “Where are the sunglasses?”)

  • Everyone writes their answer (on the chair, in the drawer, etc.)

  • If their answer matches the most common one in the class, they earn a point.

  • Great for practicing listening, writing, and speaking—all at once!

This activity is low-prep, highly interactive, and easy to adapt for in-person or online classrooms. It encourages repetition, builds vocabulary and makes grammar fun for beginners. Students will leave your class saying “It’s under the chair!” with confidence.
