Here is a fun and simple prepositions of place at home activity to practice some home vocabulary with your beginners. You can pair this activity with our other preposition activities.
How to use it
The point of this Prepositions of Place at Home activity is to put the 4 elements together to create a grammatically correct phrase.
- There is…
- a quantifier…
- a piece of furniture…
- a positional element…
Why did I add the quantifier portion? Because I have spent the last three years mostly teaching those whose mother tongue lacks articles.
I often hear myself repeating “How many?” or “Which?” or something of the kind to remind them to add the article.
This addition of the quantifier will hopefully get students to remember the difference between there is / there are and their negative counterparts.
Some ideas
- Students describe the room they are currently in. This works well for in-person classes, too, as students can compare their answers with other students. Who has a more detailed description of the classroom?
- If you are online, students can describe the room they are in, and then the others can guess which room of the house it is.
- Students describe their dream home, that of a celebrity’s or an imaginary place.
- Students guess what their partner’s house looks like. They earn one point for any correct details!
- Give students a time limit for their descriptions.
