Write the Rules – ESL Writing Activity (A2–B1)
This printable and online-friendly writing activity gets your students working in pairs or small groups to create realistic (or ridiculous!) rules for places like a swimming pool, a hospital, or a natural history museum.
Each group writes 3–5 rules for each location using the useful vocabulary and structures provided (e.g. must, mustn’t, no…, don’t…, always, never). After comparing rules with others, the class collaborates to create a master rule list for each place—choosing the most useful, funniest, or most creative rules.
Great for practicing modals, imperatives, and classroom collaboration in a fun and engaging way!
