What do they wish or hope for?
In my time as an ESL teacher, I have found there are three structures (plus a fourth, which is a duplicate of one of the first three) that often get mixed up for learners. We created this activity to try to right the ship. The three structures in question:
- Would like (to)
- Wish (or “if only”)
- Hope
This activity gives your students a chance to practice all three (four) of them at once with visual context to help them integrate the right information. Come up with your own great way to use this worksheet, or get inspired by one of our own ideas:
- One by one, choose a structure from the bottom of the activity for your students to practice. Give everyone a time limit (30 seconds to 1 minute) to come up with something one of the characters would say if they were using that structure based on the picture. One by one, students will present their statements to the class. The first person to correctly guess the correct photo earns a point.
- Choose one of the photos, and give your students a time limit to come up with four statements, one for each structure. Vote on the best use of each structure.
- What can you come up with? Share your activity in the comments.
