Simple Phrase Olympics
Beginners compete to make simple phrases with limited information. They will practice the basic presentation verbs, such as be, like, live, have and play.
On the worksheet, beginners are presented with several lines containing a bit of information. For example “[SHE] Portuguese 2 points” Every student’s goal is to use that limited information to make a simple phrase, write it down and then check the box next to the number of points. Give your class a time limit for the activity, maybe 3-5 minutes. Then, each student will read off their sentences to the class. The class will correct the student as they speak. The student earns the number of points allotted to the phrase if it is grammatically correct. The phrases will all use the basic verbs of presentation: be, like, love, hate, live, have, speak and play. With beginners, you could probably play a few times before all the boxes are checked off.
Another way to play, if you want to go a little further, would be to choose one of the lines and give your beginners 30 seconds to make a simple phrase. Then, everyone presents their phrase with the number of points allotted to the phrase for anyone who comes up with an original phrase.
