What did they do before they were famous?

Functional language: Tell a story
Skill: Speaking

Teach your students how to talk about their job experience by practicing with famous people first!

How to use this activity?

Students can work individually or in groups. The goal of the game is to tell the backstory of these “famous” people by using the words in the boxes to the right. Give your students some time to write their answers and then present them to the class.

If you want to keep going, you can also ask them to create other characters. Of course, any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, would be purely coincidental! Of course.

For example:

  • Ankela Berkel’s first job was at a call center. She learned how to argue and negotiate with customers. Then she was a babysitter where she took care of…
  • Zach Zukerbergerger was a delivery boy when he was in college. That’s where he got the idea for an app…

Description

Talking about work in English should also mean being able to tell about one’s job experience and biography. Why not practice with made-up characters first? Use this activity as a game to get your students talking and test their creativity!

Oh and just like our other Jukeboxes, it can be used online and offline for groups or one-on-one lessons!

Have fun!

As a teacher of ESL and French as a foreign language for several years, I have had the opportunity to work in several countries and with a wide variety of students. Now my job got even better: I get to help make your lessons all pretty and fun! Rather cool, I'd say.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
