Everyday Activities Writing Exercise

This fun and engaging writing exercise helps A1-A2 students practice using vocabulary related to habits, routines, and everyday activities. The worksheet includes text message prompts along with emojis that students must incorporate into their responses. To make things even more dynamic, students can earn a bonus for using vocabulary from their textbook lists!

You can play this game in any way you’d like, but here’s what we recommend:

Play as a class: Select a student to respond to one of the text messages aloud or on the board while using an emoji in their response. The rest of the class must guess which message they are replying to. The first student to guess correctly earns a point and takes the next turn.

Play individually: Give students a time limit to respond to as many text messages as they can using appropriate vocabulary and emojis. Then, have them compare responses in pairs or small groups.

Play in pairs: Assign students a text message at random, or let them choose one. Each pair writes a short text conversation, ensuring they use at least one emoji and relevant vocabulary. Then, they present their exchanges to the class.

Speed challenge: Read a text message aloud and have students take turns quickly responding with an appropriate phrase, including an emoji. If a student hesitates or repeats an idea, they are out!

This printable and online-friendly PDF activity makes learning vocabulary for everyday activities more interactive and enjoyable. Perfect for classroom use, online lessons, or self-study!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
