A Day in the Life – ESL Writing Activity

This engaging ESL writing activity encourages A1-A2 students to practice vocabulary related to habits, routines, and everyday activities by imagining a typical day for a celebrity! The worksheet features hand-drawn portraits of famous figures on the left and 24 verb phrases (e.g., “take a nap,” “make a phone call,” “go to the gym”) on the right.

Ways to Play:

🔹 Who’s the Celebrity? – Students write a short narrative using a set number of vocabulary words from the worksheet. Once completed, the class guesses which celebrity they’re describing!

🔹 Best Daily Routine – Students work individually or in small groups to write a routine for the same celebrity. Then, they share their writing, vote on the most creative or realistic version, or combine ideas into one final routine.

🔹 Collaborative Storytelling – One student starts by writing the first sentence of the celebrity’s routine. Each student adds a new sentence using a different verb phrase. The story grows until all phrases are used!

🔹 Routine Swap – After writing about a celebrity’s day, students exchange their texts and revise each other’s work for clarity and accuracy, reinforcing what they’ve learned through peer feedback.

This printable and online-friendly PDF is a fun way to develop vocabulary, creativity, and writing skills while making routines and daily activities more relatable!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
