ESL Discussion: Relocating to Dubai
Dubai has gone out of its way to make relocation there as simple and pain free as possible. Use this ESL discussion worksheet to talk about relocating to Dubai.
Full disclosure, I’ve never been. But I am on YouTube a lot… And there’s always controversy around Dubai and the UAE. With titles like “Dubai is Literal Hell,” “Dubai is Everything Wrong with Society” and “Why You Need to Move Here Now” it’s hard to know what to think. Sure, I could hop on a plane and go visit but… At any rate, apparently loads of people are moving or trying to move to Dubai for the climate, its tax incentives, networking, innovation and luxury lifestyle. They have also made it easier than ever to be an expat there, which does sound quite inviting indeed after having gone through some not so pleasant experiences myself as an expat. Use this ESL discussion worksheet to talk about relocating to Dubai with your students.
- Warm-up question ideas: Tell me one thing you know about Dubai. Tell me one thing you need to think about when relocating to a new country.
- Watch the video once and either ask students which parts of relocation mentioned at the beginning of the class were talked about in the video, or ask students a question such as “Why do you think Dubai is making relocation so simple?”
- Look at the vocabulary words on the PDF before watching the video a second time.
- Put students in pairs to answer the questions on the left.
- Set up new pairs to complete the speaking activity on the right.
- At the end, put students in small groups of 3-4 to complete the group activity.
- Think about assigning the go further activity on the second page for homework.
