Numbers and Cities for Beginners
A brief introduction to cities, numbers and unruly English pronunciation.
You were able to use the very first ESL activity yesterday or earlier in the lesson plan, and now it’s time to level up. This A0 activity introduces numbers and cities to complete beginners along with the idea that English pronunciation can be, well, a bit non-sensical.
- First, go through all the cities and pronounce them with your students. Take note to point out that many letters sound different depending on where they are or just the pronunciation of the word. No need to explain those rules today, though!
For example, WarsAw / San FrAncisco; AlgierS / PariS; BerlIn / BeijIng; etc.
- Put students in pairs. They will try to match the names of the cities to the photos by using the structures they find at the bottom right.
Here the structures of “That is” ; “Is that” ; “What about” will be helpful for your beginners.
- Come back as a group when everyone has finished and go over the answers, correcting pronunciation as you go. Now students have been introduced to numbers, a couple useful structures and unruly English pronunciation!
