Football ESL Vocabulary Activity
An simple and easy to use football ESL vocabulary activity to get your students talking about football in your online or offline class.
With World Cup 2022 underway, it seemed a good time to put out a football ESL vocabulary activity. The weirdest thing though, is that it’s actually useful because it’s not in the middle of summer break. Use this conversational mind map as a warm up in your classroom, at the end of a rigorous grammar section, or in any of your other lesson plans revolving around the World Cup. If you’re looking for one to use, check out our Online Friendly Discussion: World Cup 2022 Controversies.
How to use it
The idea behind this conversational mind map is simple. There are several propositions at the top for your students to organize their thoughts and a list of vocabulary at the bottom. If you want to play as a class, have students associate one word at a time with one of the propositions at the top. They do this by explaining why it belongs there, according to them. Move on to the next student, or ask the class if they have another idea. Once the word is used, check the box so that it can’t be used again. Do the same thing if you want your students to work in pairs or small groups. Bring them back together as a class to discuss any words their group had difficulty placing.
Enjoy your World Cup and best of luck to your home nation!
