Real English Conversation: Hobbies & Free time

This activity is great to get your students to actually speak the language they’re learning! Let them practice in class so that they can feel more comfortable in day-to-day conversations!

How to use this activity?

For online lessons, use a pair of online dice to play this game and make sure students can see them (it’s just more fun that way). On the left are phrases plucked from the middle of random conversations. On the right are various free time activity genres.

Roll the dice. The number of the left die decides the sentence and the one on the right decides the constraint. Give your students 30-60 seconds to come up with a response to the question What would you say if you heard… and to write it in the chat. Every grammatically correct sentence earns a point and the “best” sentence earns a bonus point. Play as many rounds as you want. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

For example:

What would you say if you heard… “This new job is great! I’ve got lots of free time”

Mention a sport: Good for you! You can finally play tennis whenever you want, then! No need to wait for the weekend.

As a teacher of ESL and French as a foreign language for several years, I have had the opportunity to work in several countries and with a wide variety of students. Now my job got even better: I get to help make your lessons all pretty and fun! Rather cool, I'd say.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
