This compound noun guessing game serves primarily two functions:

  1. Organizes 24 basic compound nouns applicable for beginners with illustrations for reference.
  2. Works as a taboo-style speaking game for beginner and intermediate speakers.

Display the activity on the board, projector or share your screen. Choose a student at random to begin the game. They should have an object in mind from the PDF. They must get the others to guess the object by describing its function or appearance. The only rule is that you can’t use either of the two words that make up the compound noun. E.g. “You wear this when it rains.” would be against the rules of this compound noun guessing game if the answer was “Raincoat”.

You could also try a reverse taboo game where students try to describe what their object isn’t. 🤷‍♂️

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
