Speaking of… Gamestop stock price

Another “Speaking of…” resource to save the day! Did something come up and now you don’t have time to plan something? Are you tired of your regular go-to site’s ugly activity layout? Want to impress your students with something more interesting than usual? That’s what “Speaking of…” is for.

Today’s Speaking of… activity focuses on the Gamestop stock price phenomenon that recently took place and whose saga continues today. As always, there is a discussion aide and a small activity to finish it off.

Oh yeah, and a video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOKz6qnvLx0

Discussion aide:

Watch the video at least once with your students. Go over any interesting vocabulary you may have found. Then, display the discussion aide (page 1) and let your students read through the statements. Once they have read through them, ask students to find one statement they agree with. Have them take turns sharing the statement they agree with and explaining why. Then, ask your students to find a statement they disagree with. Again, they will take turns sharing the statement and elaborating on it.

Activity:

Students can work individually, in pairs, or as a group. The activity on page 2 shows the stock market graph of a company. Which company? First, have your students as a group decide on the name and type of a company. It can be serious such as Pittsburgh Steelworks or fun like Tim’s Tiger Emporium. Students will write the story of this company over the last few years based on the stock market price. Encourage your students to get creative!
