Talking about Math: The Language of Numbers

Talk about numbers and math in English with an introduction to the history of mathematical symbols. Can your students express basic math?

In this 90-minute advanced ESL lesson, students talk about numbers and math in English. This resource is intended for B2 students, but it also works well for C1 students because it is such as specific topic which introduces the history of mathematical symbols.

This Numbers and Math Activity includes :

  • a warm up activity (I recommend even a pre-warm up question: What’s your favorite or least favorite number?),
  • authentic TEDed material,
  • listening comprehension questions,
  • vocabulary exercises,
  • story problems to test your students’ skills,
  • and a speaking activity where students talk about math with a partner.

Maybe you never thought to talk about numbers and math in English, but I can assure you this is a fantastic lesson to challenge your more advanced students. Simple arithmetic can be very important for those living abroad, and being able to express some basic mathematic principles correctly may help your students to solve some everyday problems quickly!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
