Text Messages from a Wonderful Mother’s Day

Respond to real English text messages

In case you missed it, text your mom right quick and tell her you were sick as a dog yesterday and couldn’t get out of bed long enough to call her and wish her a Happy Mother’s Day! That’s for all you American teachers out there. For a bunch of other places, you haven’t screwed up just yet. Mark your calendar! Set an alarm! Use this Mother’s Day ESL activity!

This is based on our other seasonal SMS activities. The idea is simple. Share your screen so everyone can see the activity. Choose a student to go first. They secretly choose a message to respond to. These are text messages one might encounter on Mother’s Day. The student writes their message in the chat, while the other students try to figure out which message they are responding to. This is a great chance for your students to practice their humor in English! If the other students can’t figure out the match within a minute or two, give them the answer. Sometimes it’s not always so easy, but when they see the match, it’s usually pretty funny.

You can go even further with this Mother’s Day ESL activity by having students each make one or two of their own Mother’s Day text messages, regrouping them in the chat or on your whiteboard, and playing the same way with their original ideas.

Have fun!

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
