Job Skills

Functional language: Give advice
Grammar: Modal Verbs
Skill: Speaking

Use this game to challenge your students. In teams, they will compete to create as many correct sentences as possible to give work-related advice to the people presented on the cards.

How to use this activity?

Display the poster and assign score cards accordingly (Team 1, Team 2…). Choose a card to start and read it aloud to the students. Set a time limit (60-90 seconds) for students to respond to the question by using the verbs found on their score card. For more advanced students, let them come up with as many answers as possible within the time limit. Each time a word has been used, mark it off on their score card. Tally up the phrases at the end which are grammatically correct and award points accordingly. If a word was crossed off but used incorrectly, the cross stays but no points are awarded.

For example, for the first card and the score card for Team 1: Tom likes computers, but is not a hard worker. What should he do?

– He should ask his doctor for advice on how to be more motivated at work.

– He should become a manager and simply let the others do the work while monitoring their activity on complicated-looking software.

The words doctor (4 points) and manager (2 points) are crossed off and the current total of points for Team 1 is 6 points.

Play as many rounds as you want or to a time limit. The team or student with the most points at the end wins.

As a teacher of ESL and French as a foreign language for several years, I have had the opportunity to work in several countries and with a wide variety of students. Now my job got even better: I get to help make your lessons all pretty and fun! Rather cool, I'd say.

It takes a team of 13 to create and produce this material. In order for that to continue, please think about purchasing your own subscription to ESL Expertz and encourage your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate your confidence and support!
