For the record, today is October 5, 2021. Yesterday, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram all stopped working for several hours.

I never thought I really needed any of these applications until they fatally crashed.

I had…

  • problems informing clients of important schedule changes;
  • a frustrated wife who thought I was ignoring her;
  • missed phone calls from my family;
  • etc…

It was a frustrating situation, but it did get me thinking…
What are the alternatives?
Are there alternatives?
Are Mark Zuckerberg and his cronies the new kings of the world?
Will the lizard men of the hollow earth rise up and defend us?

With these ideas in mind, I created this little phrase building exercise to help your students offer suggestions and alternatives.
I kept out the lizard men.

If you are a teacher who likes to use current events, or something like Breaking News English, you could definitely use this after the reading or listening portion to get your students talking about life without social media.

I have been teaching English abroad since receiving my CELTA certificate in Poland in 2018. I enjoy tracking my individual students’ development but love having lessons with big groups! Now that I teach online, I am accompanied by my sidekicks Olaf, Mała, Pirate and Bandit on a regular basis.
